Getting started · 4 minute read · Sample editorial

An initial appointment is a chance to understand what is happening and decide on a useful next step together. You do not need to have the answers before you arrive.

Before your visit

Think about the activities that have become difficult and the things you would like to return to. You may find it helpful to write down a few questions, so they are easy to remember during the appointment.

What to bring and wear

Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move. Bring relevant surgical guidance, a medicines list and any information your clinician has asked you to bring. Keep medical records out of online demo forms.

During the assessment

Your physiotherapist will ask about your concerns and explain any movement checks. You can ask why a test is suggested, decline an option or request a pause. Treatment is only discussed once your needs are understood.

Questions worth asking

  • What have you found in the assessment?
  • What options are suitable for me?
  • What should I do before the next review?

General preparation only. This guide cannot assess symptoms or replace individual advice from a qualified healthcare professional. If you feel seriously unwell or have an urgent health concern, use the appropriate NHS service rather than a website form.
