Recovery guide · 4 minute read · Sample editorial

Returning to a favourite activity can feel uncertain. A conversation about your goals, current ability and daily routine can help you make a more considered plan.

Start with what matters

Be specific about what you would like to do. Walking to the shops, lifting at work and returning to a weekly match place different demands on your body. Tell your physiotherapist which part matters to you most.

Discuss what you can currently manage, how you feel afterwards and any advice you have already been given. Following surgery, your surgical team’s restrictions and rehabilitation plan take priority.

Agree how to review progress

A plan should include a way to review how you are responding. Ask what to monitor, when to check in and what would be a reason to pause. Progress may vary and a fixed timetable is not a guarantee.

Keep questions practical

  • What is a sensible starting point for my current ability?
  • How will we decide when to change the plan?
  • Who should I contact if my symptoms change?
